For the reader who feels further behind with every morning that gets missed.
Nothing has been accumulating while you were away, and the feeling that something has is the only part of this that isn't true.
You've been keeping a count you never agreed to keep. It isn't written anywhere. If somebody asked you the number you'd have to estimate, and you'd estimate high, because that's what the count does.
It started small. A week of early starts, then a fortnight when your mother was ill, then a stretch where you meant to and the morning kept going before you got to it.
Now it's past a year, and the size of the number is itself the obstacle. A person can restart after a week. Restarting after a year feels like it needs a decision with some weight behind it, and you haven't had a day with that much weight in it for a while.
So the book stays shut, the count goes up, and the higher it goes the heavier the door gets.
Nothing accumulated while you were away, because mercy is new rather than carried over. Scripture says so. Lamentations was written over a ruined city and says His compassions are new every morning, and the Spirit brings today's supply as today's.

Who Told You It Accrues
Nobody did, in words. You worked it out from how everything else behaves.
Debt accrues. Laundry accrues. Unread post accrues in a pile by the door and gets worse by sitting there, and you know from experience that the pile is the thing that makes the pile hard to face.
So a mind that has learned how the world works applies the same rule here. It's an honest mistake and it's completely wrong. Piles are made of objects. Missed mornings leave nothing behind, because a morning isn't a thing that stays on the table.
The pile you're imagining has no items in it. You have been walking past an empty place in the hall and flinching at it for a year.
Test it the way you'd test anything else. Name one object in the pile. Not a feeling about the pile, not the number of weeks, but one thing you could pick up and put down. There isn't one, and there never was.
You aren't facing a pile, because a morning that passed left nothing on the table. The written Word's lament describes God's mercies as new every morning rather than as arrears, and the Spirit holds nothing over from yesterday.
New Every Morning
Here's the passage, and the word new is doing all the work in it.
It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
New every morning. Not replenished, not extended, not rolled over with whatever was left from the day before. New, which means this morning's mercy has no relationship at all to yesterday's and isn't reduced by anything you did or didn't do with it.
And the faithfulness in the sentence is His. Great is thy faithfulness, rather than great is your consistency. The reliability being celebrated belongs to God, and the writer is somebody in the middle of a catastrophe saying it anyway.
Those words were first written over a ruined city by a man who had watched everything go, and they arrive in a quiet kitchen without narrowing.
You are met by mercy that is new this morning and owes nothing to yesterday. Scripture's lament says His compassions are new every morning, and the Spirit brings today's supply with no reference to your record.
The Word Behind Is the Whole Problem
Stay on that one word, because everything heavy in this is stored inside it.
Behind implies a position on a course. A course implies a place you were supposed to have reached by now, which implies that somebody set a schedule. Who set it? Not God, who nowhere issues a reading rate to anybody. Not the group, which doesn't exist any more.
You did, probably years ago, without noticing, by watching people you admired and quietly working out the pace they seemed to keep.
The people you were watching had bad months too. You simply weren't in the room for those, because nobody announces them, and a pace built out of other people's good weeks is not a pace anybody has ever kept.
So the schedule you're behind on is one you wrote yourself and then forgot writing, and you've been serving a sentence handed down by a version of you who isn't around to be argued with.
You can put down a schedule nobody issued, because God never set a pace for you. The written Word's lament gives mercy new each morning with no rate attached, and the Spirit isn't holding a timetable over you.
I Am Not Giving You a Way to Catch Up
Be plain about the help this refuses to offer, because it would be so easy to be useful here.
I'm not handing you a plan for catching up. No shortened chapters, no summary to fill the gap, no fortnight of easy readings. Every one of those confirms that a course exists and that you're off it, and three sections have just argued that it doesn't.
Nor am I telling you the year was fine and cost you nothing. It may have cost you something real. You'd know better than me, and I won't flatter you about it.
What I'm taking away is the arithmetic. Not the loss, if there was one. The count.
Open It at Noon If You Like
The turn here takes the morning out of it entirely, and that's what dissolves the count.
You've built this whole thing around mornings, because mornings are when it used to happen. So a morning that goes by unused feels like a door that shut, and by nine o'clock the day is already a failure.
Nothing in the passage mentions a time of day. It says the mercies are new every morning, which is a promise about supply rather than an appointment slot. Open the book at noon. Open it at ten at night with the television still going.
The count can't survive that. A count needs a deadline to measure against, and if there's no hour that the day is failing, there's nothing to be behind on.
You can open it at any hour, because mercy new every morning was never a deadline. Scripture's lament promises the supply rather than the slot, and the Spirit meets you at noon as readily as at six.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Nothing below is yours by achievement. You stand in Christ and Christ stands in you, so saying it aloud agrees with something already settled, and the Spirit carries agreement. The outcome stays with Him.
Speak it aloud once, in your ordinary voice.
Nothing accumulated while I was away, and mercy is new rather than carried over. It is written in Lamentations that His compassions fail not and are new every morning, and new means this morning's owes nothing to yesterday. The Spirit brings today's supply without reference to my record. I am not behind. The schedule I have been failing is one I wrote myself and then forgot writing, and I put it down now. I leave the book open, whatever the hour.
