For the man who served on a rota for years and hears an old line surface while he paints.
Say a man is repainting a porch rail on a Saturday in April, second coat, with nothing running in the background because the radio battery went months ago and he never replaced it.
He's about two thirds along when he notices what's been going through his head. Not a tune and not a fragment. A whole line of Scripture, word for word, that he hasn't looked at in nine years.
He stops. Not because he's embarrassed, since there's nobody within two hundred yards of that porch. He stops because he doesn't know what to do with it.
For eleven years he was on a rota. Second Sunday and fourth Sunday, plus Christmas, plus whatever else came up. He knew his part, he knew when he was needed, and he knew what the whole arrangement was for.
Now there's a porch rail, a line, and no reason for either. He stands there with a brush going tacky in his hand.
What was hidden in him nine years ago is still in him, and nine years didn't empty it out. Scripture's psalm was written about a word hidden in the heart rather than held in a slot, and the Spirit keeps what is hidden alive without any use for it.

A Part Is Not the Same as a Possession
Eleven years of holding a part will teach a man something true and leave out something else entirely.
You learned when you were needed, how to hold back, how to carry a responsibility without pulling focus onto yourself. All of that is real craft and most people can't manage it. You also learned, without anybody ever saying so, that what you carried had a slot, and outside the slot it wasn't quite anything.
So the line surfaces on a porch and you don't know what it is. It has no service around it. It isn't serving anybody. By the only definition you have had for eleven years, it doesn't qualify.
That definition was never in the book. It's a description of a rota, and you have been applying it to your own memory on a Saturday morning.
Rotas are good at what they do. They make sure somebody is there on the fourth Sunday, they spread a load, and they stop one person carrying everything until they break. What they cannot do is tell you what anything is worth outside them, and nobody ever expected them to try.
What you hold is a possession rather than a part, and possessions don't need a slot. The written Word's psalm as written puts the word inside a man rather than inside an arrangement, and the Spirit keeps it there with nobody present.
Hidden in the Heart
Here's the verse, and the verb in the middle is the one worth slowing over.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.Psalm 119:11 (KJV)
Hid. Not memorized for an occasion, not stored against a date, not filed where it could be retrieved on request. Hidden, which is what a person does with something valuable they intend to keep whether or not anybody asks for it.
Then notice the purpose given. That I might not sin against thee. The reason for hiding it is what it does inside a man, in private, with nobody watching. There's no audience anywhere in the sentence and no occasion it's being kept for.
Those words were first written by somebody with a temple available to him and a public life to lead, and they arrive on a porch rail without narrowing at all.
What was hidden in you was hidden for you, and it was never being stored for an occasion. Scripture's psalm as written gives the purpose as what the word does inside a man, and the Spirit keeps it working with nobody watching.
Nine Years Is Not Silence
Say something about the nine years, because they weren't what you think they were.
You've been telling yourself the whole thing stopped. But a line arrived whole on a porch, word for word, after nine years without practice or use. That doesn't come from a man in whom something stopped. It comes from a man in whom it has been sitting.
What genuinely stops, goes. You can't recall a phone number you dialed for eleven years and haven't used since. You can recall this, and it came out without being sent for by anybody.
So the honest account isn't nine years of silence. It's nine years of something being kept, and one Saturday when the keeping came up through the floorboards.
You never lost what was hidden, and its arrival on a porch is the proof. The written Word's psalm as written describes a word hidden in the heart rather than held in a season, and the Spirit has kept it through the whole nine years.
I Am Not Putting You Back on a Rota
Be clear about the ending this won't write, because you'd see it coming and put the brush down.
I'm not telling you to find somewhere to serve. Not a group, not a rota, not a spot at the back on a second Sunday. If something like that opens up one day and it's good, I'll be glad, and nothing here depends on it.
Nor am I telling you to do this every morning now. There's no practice being installed and no minimum being set. Let the next line surface or don't, and neither answer has anything to do with whether God met you on this porch.
What I want gone is the moment you stopped. Not the paint. Not the quiet.
Finish the Line
The turn here happened before you read any of this, and you were the one who made it.
When you stopped in the middle of that line, the question in your head was whether it counted. You stood there with a tacky brush working out whether something with no service around it was worth anything at all.
Then you started again, quieter, and finished it. That's the answer. You gave it yourself, on a porch, without any help, and then you spent the rest of the morning doubting it.
The finishing was the right instinct and the doubting was the rota talking. Trust the first one. It was hidden in you for keeping, the porch is where you happened to be standing, and it came up because it was there.
You answered the question when you finished the line, and the answer was right. Scripture's psalm as written puts the word inside a man for his own keeping, and the Spirit brought it up on a Saturday without being asked.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
You aren't claiming this on your own account. Christ has made His home in you, and you stand inside Him, which turns speaking it back to God into agreement rather than invention. What He does about the rest is His.
Say it through once, slowly.
What was hidden in me is still in me, and nine years did not empty it out. The psalm stands written that thy word have I hid in mine heart, and hiding is what a person does with something they mean to keep. The Spirit kept it there through nine years with nobody asking for it. I did not stop. A line of Scripture came up through the floorboards on a Saturday because it had been sitting there the whole time. I leave the book open and finish the line.
