The Amen Between Two Laundry Baskets

This message is for two sisters who pray on speakerphone while folding laundry in separate homes and need assurance that Christ gathers with them there

For two sisters who pray over a speakerphone with a basket each.

Look at the phone itself, propped against a laundry basket, screen turned face down so the light stops bothering anybody in the room.

It's stood on that same surface most Thursdays for two years. There's a scuff along the case from the evening it slid off the basket lid and went under the dryer. The connection is poor, it has always been poor, and neither of you has ever once suggested a different app.

Two hundred miles away her phone leans the same way against her own basket, balanced on a kitchen chair, because she hasn't a free table on a Thursday and never has had one.

Between the two of you lies a pile of somebody's work shirts, a pile of school uniform, and about forty minutes. You talk. You fold. Somewhere near the end one of you says amen, and afterwards neither of you can remember which of you started praying.

Then you hang up, carry the basket to the stairs, and think in passing that it's a shame the two of you never manage to meet properly.

You are gathered with your sister in His name, and a room was never part of the promise. Scripture says so. Matthew recorded the terms in Christ's own mouth, and the Spirit holds the pair of you inside them down a connection that keeps breaking up.

The Amen Between Two Laundry Baskets

What the Word Properly Is Doing to You

Properly does a great deal of quiet work in that closing sentence, and every bit of the work runs against you.

Meet properly, pray properly, do the thing properly. Each time that word turns up you are measuring what you actually have against an imagined version involving a shared room, and the version with the room in it is always the one that counts.

I'd genuinely like to know where that standard came from, because it isn't in the promise and it isn't anywhere in the letters that explain the promise. It arrived from somewhere in your upbringing, moved into the house, and has been charging you rent on a Thursday evening for two solid years.

Ask what properly is actually supposed to add here. His presence? He undertook that Himself. Honesty? You're more honest over a laundry basket than most people ever manage in a pew. Attention? You're folding, which is precisely the sort of work that lets a person say a difficult sentence out loud without having to look at anybody.

Properly has already happened, because He set the terms and the two of you have met them. The written Word's recorded promise names two in His name and asks for nothing further, and the Spirit keeps it live on a poor line.

Neither of You Can Remember Who Started

Stay with the part the two of you find funny, because I don't think it's only funny.

Talking turns into praying somewhere around the second basket. Nobody announces the change. By the time one of you says amen you've been at it a while, and the seam between the two has gone completely.

That blur isn't carelessness, and it isn't a sign that you're doing it badly. It's what happens when two people are honest with each other in front of God for long enough that the join stops being visible from either side. Most people never arrive there at all. It takes years, and it takes the particular kind of trust that folding somebody else's school uniform quietly builds.

A great deal of careful religion is spent trying to manufacture that seam deliberately, with structure and silence and good intentions. The pair of you lost it by accident, and you lost it in the right direction.

The two of you have arrived where most people never get, and you've been calling it a failure to meet properly. Scripture's promise as Matthew recorded it settles on exactly this sort of gathering, and the Spirit is what wore the seam away.

The Only Requirement in the Sentence

Here's the verse, read once for what it asks of you and for nothing else at all.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.Matthew 18:20 (KJV)

Two. In my name. That's the entire list, and the sentence doesn't go on to add a third item anywhere else in the chapter or in anything written afterwards about it.

No room gets specified. No building, no hour, no seating, no shared air. People assume the shared room because gathered sounds like bodies occupying a space, and in the first century that's largely what it had to mean, since nobody had any other way of managing it.

The promise isn't about air in a room, though. It's about His name being the reason two people are together at all, and that reason is exactly as real down a bad line as it is across a kitchen table.

Those words were spoken first to disciples working out how to handle one another after a falling out, and nothing in them narrows when they arrive at a dryer two hundred miles from a kitchen chair.

You're gathered in His name, which is the whole of what He listed. The written Word's recorded sentence sets no other condition anywhere, and the Spirit has held the two of you inside it for two years.

Gathered Is About What Drew You

The whole weight of this sits on one word, and you've been reading that word in the narrowest way available.

Gathered has looked to you like a description of bodies in a space, so a phone call fails the test automatically, and no amount of sound theology afterwards can quite repair a word you've already made up your mind about.

But gathering is about being drawn together, and the question worth asking is what drew you. Two sisters with baskets on a Thursday were drawn by His name, week after week, for two years, through two house moves and one genuinely bad winter.

A room is where gathering shows. A name is what gathering is. You've held the second one the whole time, and you've been grading yourself on the first.

Notice what that grading has cost. Every Thursday for two years has been filed on arrival as a near miss, which means the steadiest hour in your week has been entered in your own accounts at a loss. Nobody asked you to keep the books that way, and nobody has ever checked them.

The two of you have been gathered for two years, and a room was never what made it so. Scripture's sentence as written attaches itself to His name rather than to a space, and the Spirit makes the midst a real place on a Thursday evening.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

You add nothing to this by saying it and lose nothing by saying it badly. Christ dwells in you, the Spirit carries the words, and God arranges what comes after in His own time.

Speak it where you stand, unhurried.

My sister and I are gathered in His name, and no room was ever part of the promise. It is written. Matthew recorded Him saying that where two or three are gathered together in His name, there am I in the midst of them, and no building appears anywhere in the sentence. The Spirit holds the two of us together on a Thursday down a line that keeps breaking up. This isn't a lesser version of meeting properly. We've been gathered for two years, and He's stood in the middle of it every single week. I stop apologizing for a phone propped against a basket.
