The Prayer Drawn on a Grocery Sack

This message is for two friends sketching a shared prayer rhythm on a grocery sack who need freedom to build something useful without making the structure their master

For two friends who sketched a rhythm on a paper sack and then got frightened of it.

The sack's still on the side, flattened out, with the seam split down one edge where somebody tore it open to get a writing surface.

On it there are six words and four arrows. Read. Say it out loud. Ask. Wait a minute. Thanks. Then an arrow that loops back to the start, drawn twice because the first one wasn't clear enough.

It was a Tuesday. You were both trying to describe what you already do when it goes well, so the other one could manage it too on a week when nothing came naturally.

It took ten minutes, it was genuinely useful, and you both went home pleased with yourselves. Then at about eleven that night one of you looked at it on the counter and felt something cold, because it had started to look like a system, and you left a system.

You haven't thrown it away. You haven't used it either. It's been on the side for five weeks now.

Six words on a paper sack have no authority over you that you don't hand them. Scripture says so. Christ's recorded promise fixes His presence on two in His name rather than on any method, and the Spirit is what keeps a help from hardening into a rule.

The Prayer Drawn on a Grocery Sack

Why the Sack Frightened You at Eleven at Night

The fear isn't irrational, and it deserves naming accurately before anything else gets said about it.

You came out of a place where a good practice became a measurement, and where the measurement quietly became the way people worked out who was serious. It didn't start badly. Almost nothing that ends up heavy starts out heavy.

So when you saw six words and four arrows sitting on a counter, you recognized the opening frame of a film you have already watched all the way through, and you did the sensible thing, which was to stop.

That instinct is worth keeping. It isn't paranoia. It's a man who's been burned checking the pan before he puts his hand anywhere near it, and I'd not ask you to stop checking.

What I would ask is that the checking be allowed to finish. A man who checks the pan and then never cooks again hasn't protected himself from anything except supper. Your instinct did its job in about four seconds on that Tuesday night, and then it kept running for five weeks with nothing left to examine.

You can honor what that fear protects and still pick the sack back up. The Word says that rests on two in His name rather than inside any pattern, and the Spirit keeps you free while you use a help.

Two, in His Name, and Nothing About Method

Set the paper down and look at what He actually asked for.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.Matthew 18:20 (KJV)

There's no order of service in that sentence. No method, no sequence, no sheet of any kind. Jesus attaches His presence to two people and to His own name, and then He stops talking.

That cuts in two directions, and both of them help you. No structure can produce His presence, which means nobody is ever in a position to sell you one. No structure can block His presence either, which means six words on your sack cannot get between you and Him.

The sheet isn't the condition, and it isn't an obstacle. It's a piece of paper with handwriting on it, holding exactly as much authority as the two of you decide to hand over.

Those words went first to disciples in a community learning how to handle a fracture, and they arrive in a kitchen with a torn sack without narrowing on the way.

You are gathered in His name rather than in a method, so the sheet holds nothing over you. The written Word's recorded sentence names no procedure anywhere, and the Spirit is what makes the meeting live.

A Help and a Master Are Told Apart by One Question

Here's the test, and I suspect you already know it without having put it into words.

A help is something you can put down on a bad week without owing anybody an explanation for it. A master is something you can't put down without feeling the need to account for yourself afterwards.

That's the entire difference, and it has nothing whatever to do with how organized the thing happens to be. A tidy sheet you can abandon on a Thursday is a help. A single loose habit you can't skip without guilt has already become a master, whatever it looks like from outside.

So the sack isn't dangerous because of the arrows. It becomes dangerous only at the moment you can't skip it, and you'll know that moment when it arrives, because it will feel exactly like the place you left.

That also means you can stop watching it so closely. The danger isn't stored in the paper, waiting. It would have to be built, slowly, by the pair of you, over months of treating a help as a requirement, and you'd both feel it going in.

You are free to use what helps and free to set it down, and the freedom is the test. Scripture as written places believers in Christ's liberty rather than under a pattern, and the Spirit keeps that difference clear to you.

Pick the Sack Back Up

The turn here is smaller than five weeks of avoiding a counter, and it costs nothing at all.

You've been treating that sack as though it had a will of its own, as though leaving it alone were the only safe course available. Paper has no authority. It can't ask you for anything, and it won't take offense in a week when you ignore it completely.

The thing you left was never really a sheet. It was a room full of people using a sheet to sort each other into categories. There are two of you in a kitchen, and neither of you is sorting anybody.

That difference isn't a technicality and it isn't wishful thinking. Sorting needs a third party, a standard held over somebody, and somebody willing to apply it. Your kitchen contains none of those, and it would take a considerable effort to install one.

So use the six words on a night when you have nothing. Then put it down again. Then skip three weeks on purpose, simply to prove to yourself that you can.

You can use it freely and skip it freely, and skipping it is how you'll know you're free. The written word holds you in Christ rather than in a routine, and the Spirit keeps that liberty real in your own kitchen.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Speak it as a person already joined to Him rather than as one applying to be. The Spirit carries the words, and how God answers is not something anybody can hand you in advance.

Say it the whole way down the page.

The six words on that sack are a help and not my master, and I can put them down. It is written that where two or three are gathered together in His name, there am I in the midst of them, and no method is named anywhere in the sentence. The Spirit keeps me free while I use a help, and freer still on the weeks I leave it alone. This structure holds no authority I don't hand it. I can use the six words tonight or leave them on the counter another month. He is in the midst of us either way.
