The Balcony After the Last Bus

This message is for two friends who pray on a balcony after the last bus and wonder whether an improvised gathering truly counts

For two friends who pray on a balcony because there was nowhere else to go.

You end up out there because the last bus has gone and neither of you wanted to finish the conversation indoors with the television still running.

The balcony's small. A drying rack stands folded against the wall, there's a chair with a cracked plastic arm, and a rail that you both lean on because the chair seats one and neither of you will take it.

Below, the street has that late quiet where a car arrives every few minutes and you hear it coming from a long way off. Two floors down somebody's still awake with a window open.

He tells you what's actually been going on, rather than the version he gave at work on Tuesday. Nothing useful occurs to you, so you pray standing up, both of you facing outward instead of at each other, which is easier at midnight than it sounds.

On the way back inside the familiar verdict arrives. Good night. Not really anything.

A balcony at midnight is a gathering Christ named, and improvised was never the opposite of real. Scripture's terms stand written in Matthew's account, and the Spirit keeps them in force on a rail with nothing arranged.

The Balcony After the Last Bus

The Accusation Inside That Word

Improvised carries a judgment inside it, and you probably haven't noticed that you are the one delivering the judgment.

The word means a substitute for the arranged version, assembled out of whatever came to hand because the proper arrangement wasn't available. Used about a Tuesday night, it quietly files every good hour you've had as a workaround for something better.

Two years of those, filed identically, and the filing has gradually taught you that the real thing is happening somewhere you aren't.

That lesson never arrived as an argument, which is why you have never had the chance to answer it. It arrived by repetition, one small act of clerical work at a time, across about a hundred separate Tuesday nights.

Here's a different history to set beside it. Most of what the church has ever done was assembled out of whatever came to hand, in houses, at tables, on roads, in prisons. The arranged version arrived a good deal later, and it was always the newer invention rather than the original.

What the two of you have is the older shape rather than the substitute for it. Scripture says so. Christ attaches His presence to two in His name with nothing arranged, and the Spirit keeps that steady on an unplanned night.

The Low Place You Don't Say Out Loud

Underneath the word improvised there's something you haven't put into a sentence, and it's worth saying plainly before anything else.

You think you're getting by. Not failing, exactly, and certainly not in any crisis anybody else would notice from outside. Getting by, on scraps, in a way that would embarrass you badly if somebody looked at it closely enough to ask.

That word scraps is doing the damage, and it is your word rather than anybody else's. Nobody on that balcony has ever used it. You brought it out with you from a room where portions were larger and easier to see, and you have been applying it ever since to an hour that has no portions in it at all.

That belief does real damage, because it means every genuinely good hour gets discounted the moment it arrives. Something true happens on a balcony, and you file it as further evidence of how far you've come down.

I won't tell you the feeling is silly. You lost something and you haven't replaced it, and the ache in that is honest. The discount is what I'd argue with, not the loss underneath it.

You aren't getting by on scraps, because the promise was never issued in rations. Scripture's recorded sentence names no quantity at all, and the Spirit gives His presence whole rather than in portions.

Two, and the Only Thing Asked

Here's the verse, and what matters about it is how little it requires from anybody.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.Matthew 18:20 (KJV)

Two people. His name. That's the entire requirement, and He's the one who set it that low, which is worth sitting with for rather longer than a moment.

He could have made the undertaking to an assembly and everybody there would have found it perfectly natural. Instead He chose the smallest number that can still be called together, and attached His own presence to it without qualification.

No clause about planning appears anywhere. Nothing about whether you intended to pray when you stepped outside for air. Gathered in His name covers two men on a rail who ran out of useful words and started praying because there was nothing else honest left to do.

He said it first to disciples about the hardest version of two, which is two who have fallen out with each other, and it reaches a balcony without being stretched to get there.

You're inside the only requirement He set, and you met it without planning to. Scripture says so. His recorded words name two in His name and then stop, and the Spirit drew the pair of you outside before either had thought about it.

The One Chair Nobody Sits In

Come back to the chair, because it says a good deal more than the balcony does.

Neither of you ever takes it. Two years, most weeks, and you both lean on the rail instead. Ask either of you why and you'd say it isn't worth mentioning, and you'd both be slightly wrong about that.

The chair stays empty because something in both of you would rather stand beside the other man than sit above him. Nobody taught either of you that, and it isn't a rule you agreed on. It happened by itself, the way the real ones do.

That instinct is older and deeper than any arrangement you ever sat inside. It's what the letters mean when they talk about preferring one another, and you've been doing it without any language for it, at midnight, on concrete.

No rota produces that. No committee ever sat down and settled which of two friends should decline a chair. It grew out of the pair of you standing there often enough that a courtesy hardened into a habit, and then the habit stopped needing a reason to exist.

Which is worth knowing on the nights you're inclined to call this thin. Thin arrangements don't produce that kind of instinct in anybody. They produce attendance.

You're already living what the arrangement existed to teach, and nobody had to teach it. Scripture as written calls believers to prefer one another, and the Spirit has worked that into two men who won't take the only chair.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

This is agreement rather than persuasion. Christ has taken up residence in you, the Spirit carries what you say back to God, and the ordering of everything else remains His.

Say it through, and stop at the end.

This balcony is a gathering, and improvised was never the opposite of real. It is written. It stands written in the gospel that where two or three are gathered together in His name, there am I in the midst of them, with no plan and no room anywhere in it. The Spirit holds the two of us out here after the last bus has gone. This was never a workaround. It's the older shape, and the promise sits on it exactly as it was spoken. I stop calling these nights nothing.
