Body Without Building1 Corinthians 12:15

Five People From Three Houses

This message is for the believer whose whole gathering is five people from three houses, who cannot say the word church about it out loud

For the believer whose whole gathering is five people from three houses and no address.

What would it cost you to say the word out loud, and then leave it unsoftened?

You have a phrase ready for strangers. You meet with a few people, you say. You're between churches, which is an odd way to describe something you've done faithfully for two years running. Nobody handed you that wording. You picked it up somewhere and it stuck.

There are five of you, from three houses on the same short road. One woman brings bread every week because she can't help herself. One man carries in a folding chair, since the sofa seats three and nobody wants to be the one left standing.

You read a chapter together. You pray for a man at work by his first name. Somebody's daughter has a hearing test on Thursday, and all five of you know the hour of the appointment and the name of the clinic.

Then Monday comes, a woman at the counter asks where you go, and you hear your own voice say that you go nowhere at the moment.

You're a member of Christ's body today, and nothing about the size of that room gets a vote. Scripture membership into the body itself rather than into a postcode, and the Spirit did the joining before anybody drew up a list.

Five People From Three Houses

Why the Small Room Learns to Apologize

Nobody sat you down and instructed you to shrink. Language manages it quietly, over years, in the gaps between other conversations.

The question people ask is where, and where expects a building for an answer. So a gathering with no address starts sounding like a gap in your week rather than the steadiest hour in it. You end up answering the grammar of the question instead of the truth of your life.

Then the apology turns inward, which is where the real damage gets done. If it isn't worth naming to a stranger at a counter, some part of you begins wondering whether it's worth naming to yourself on a Tuesday night when you are tired and the chair still has to be carried in.

That wondering is heavier than any stranger's opinion could be. You can survive being misunderstood by somebody at a till. It's a good deal harder to survive your own quiet suspicion that you've been pretending at something.

You aren't pretending at anything. The body you belong to was never assembled by an address in the first place, so no missing address can take it apart now.

What the Foot Said to Itself

Paul does something unusual with the argument about belonging. He doesn't answer the congregation. He puts the objection inside the body part that's doubting, and lets it speak for itself.

If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?1 Corinthians 12:15 (KJV)

Notice who raises it. Not the hand, dismissing the foot. Not the eye, drawing up entry requirements for everybody else. The foot disqualifies itself, out loud, using an accurate observation about its own shape.

The foot is right about the facts and wrong about the conclusion. It genuinely isn't a hand, and nothing it said about itself was false. What was false was the word therefore.

That's your Monday conversation, almost word for word. You aren't a congregation of four hundred, which is true and not in dispute anywhere. Then you said therefore, and Paul stops you with a question instead of letting you finish.

Those words went first to a badly divided church in a port city, and they arrive on your road without needing to be stretched.

Your own honest account of your smallness can't remove you from a body Christ put you inside. Scripture's answer to the foot is a question rather than a ruling, and the Spirit keeps that question live when the counter conversation comes round again.

Membership Was Never Your Paperwork

Here's the part worth holding longest, because it moves where the weight sits.

When you belonged to a congregation there was a form. You signed something, or you were welcomed from the front, or your name went onto a rota and into a directory printed twice a year. The belonging had visible machinery, and the machinery was genuinely useful to everybody.

What the machinery never did was create the reality it recorded. A directory lists members. It doesn't manufacture them. When you stopped walking through that door the listing ended and the membership didn't, because the two were never one object.

You've been grieving the loss of the record as though it were the loss of the life. It's a reasonable mistake to make. The record was the only part you could hold in your hand.

You lost a listing and kept a life, and those two were never the same possession. Scripture joins members to Christ first and to each other second, and the Spirit holds that second joint in place when the paperwork has gone.

I Am Not Arguing Against Anybody's Congregation

Say plainly what this isn't, because there's a version of it that would do you real harm.

The congregation you came from isn't a lesser thing, and the people carrying chairs in that building on a Sunday aren't fooling themselves about anything. Somebody in a room like that taught you the passage you read last week. Part of the reason you know how to pray at all is that they showed you how.

I'm not asking you to hold them lightly, and I'm not building you a case. A case is the last object you need. If this turned into one, it would hand you a fresh label to defend instead of lifting the old weight off your shoulders.

Your five people aren't a protest. They're a gathering, and a gathering has never needed a grievance underneath it in order to be real.

You can honor the room you came from and still receive the room you sit in now. The written Word many members into one body without ranking the floors they stand on, and the Spirit distributes to each part without consulting a plan.

The Word You Have Been Withholding

The turn here arrives quieter than a decision, and it doesn't require anything on your road to change.

You've been waiting to feel like a church before you were willing to use the word. That order is backward. Christ did the joining, the joining is finished, and the word is simply a description of what's already true in a living room on a Thursday night.

Saying it won't make it truer than it is. It will only stop your own mouth arguing with your own week.

So the next time somebody asks where you go, you don't owe them a building, a defense, or a small laugh at your own expense. You can name five people from three houses in an ordinary voice and let the sentence land where it lands.

You can call your gathering what it is, because Christ named it before you found the nerve. The written Word's letters call ordinary believers members of one body, and the Spirit makes that a present fact on your road rather than a claim you must defend.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

You aren't claiming this on your own account. Christ has made His home in you, and you stand inside Him, which turns speaking it back to God into agreement rather than invention. What He does about the rest is His.

Say it through once, slowly.

I am a member of Christ's body, and the size of my road has no vote in it. Scripture says that the foot which says I am not of the body is not therefore outside it, and that question has already answered mine. The Spirit joined me in, and no conversation at a counter can unjoin me. I am not between anything. Five people from three houses is a real gathering, and I can name it without shrinking it first. I hold the room I came from with honor and receive the room I'm in without apology.
