For the believer whose prayer arrives as messages from three distant friends.
It's 6:14 in the morning, the kettle is on, and three messages are waiting that were left while you were asleep.
The first came in at 11:40 last night your time, from a woman eight hours ahead who prays in the afternoon with a radio going in the background. You can hear the radio. You've come to like hearing it.
The second is forty seconds long and is mostly a man clearing his throat and then saying your daughter's name twice. The third arrived at 4:02 and begins with somebody apologizing for the hour, which is the one part of it you'd edit out if you could.
You go through all three standing up, with the water climbing behind you, and by the time it boils you've been prayed for by three people on three different days of the week.
Then you make the tea and feel the old thought arrive on schedule, which is that this is what you have instead of somebody praying for you properly.
Nothing had to cross anything, and what reached you was never a copy. The written Word that God set the members every one of them in the body as it pleased Him, and the Spirit carries what those three said into the room you're standing in.

The Word Instead Is Doing Damage
Somewhere along the line you started using the word instead about your own life, and it has quietly reorganized how you hear everything.
Instead assumes a real version exists elsewhere and you are holding the substitute. Once that word is in place it attaches itself to everything: this prayer instead of a hand on your shoulder, this friendship instead of a room, this Tuesday instead of a Sunday.
It's worth asking where the real version is supposed to be. Not in some perfect congregation, because no such congregation has ever existed anywhere. Not in your own past either, because when you were in a building a great many weeks went by without anybody praying for you by name.
The real version you're comparing yourself to is a picture, and a picture is a very hard thing to lose to, because it never has a bad week of its own.
Pictures don't get flu. They don't cancel, arrive late, or forget the name of your daughter. Nothing you actually have could ever win against one, which is why the comparison has gone on undefeated for however long you've been running it.
You aren't holding the substitute for something, because the life of the body was never located somewhere else. Scripture sets the members in the body by God's own choosing, and the Spirit supplies people who have never been in a room together.
God Set Them Where It Pleased Him
Here's the sentence, and the verb that matters is in the past tense and belongs to God.
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18 (KJV)
Hath set. Finished, decided, not under review. The members didn't place themselves, and no arrangement of rooms performed the placing on their behalf.
Then as it hath pleased him, which is the phrase to carry to the kettle. Your position isn't an accident God is working around. It pleased Him, and pleasure is a strong word to use about somebody's Tuesday morning.
Those words went first into a congregation quarrelling about rank, and they arrive in a kitchen at dawn without losing anything. He isn't disappointed with the shape of your morning.
You were placed by a God who was pleased to do it, and pleasure is not a compromise. Scripture's sentence puts the setting in His hands, and the Spirit keeps you in it at 6:14 with the kettle on.
What Actually Traveled at Four in the Morning
Ask a plain question about what you just heard, because the answer matters more than the arithmetic of time zones.
When that man said your daughter's name at four in the morning, what happened? Something did. He was awake, he was thinking of her, he brought her to God by name, and the God he brought her to was already in your kitchen.
The message carried his voice across three time zones. It didn't carry the prayer. The prayer went straight up from wherever he was sitting, and it went up long before you ever heard a word of it.
Which means you aren't receiving a delayed or degraded version of anything. You're being told, afterwards, about something that already happened in full, and the telling is a kindness rather than the substance.
You're prayed for in real time by people you'll never hear in real time. Scripture joins members to one another inside Christ rather than inside a shared hour, and the Spirit carries their words without needing a signal.
I Am Not Telling You This Is Ideal
Be honest, because a message that pretended would be worth very little to you.
Some of what you miss can't be handed over in a paragraph. A hand on a shoulder isn't the same as a message, and I won't insult you by saying it is. Some mornings you want somebody in the doorway, and no amount of good theology makes a doorway appear.
So I'm not going to tell you your arrangement is better, or that you aren't missing anything, or that a person who wants to be prayed for in person wants too much.
What I am telling you is narrower and more useful. The prayer is real. The membership is settled. The ache about the doorway is allowed to stay, and it isn't evidence against either of those.
Nothing Had to Make the Trip
The turn here removes the distance rather than shrinking it, and it costs nothing to see.
You've been picturing prayer as something that has to travel. Three time zones, a network, a delay, a file. Because you picture it traveling, you picture it arriving worn, like fruit shipped a long way.
Prayer doesn't cross the distance between you and your friend. It goes up. Both of you are speaking to a God who is already in both kitchens, and the geography between your two kettles isn't on the route at all.
So the messages aren't the prayer arriving. They're the receipts, heard over a kettle, for something that never had to make the trip at all.
That's why the apology at 4:02 is unnecessary and rather touching. He's sorry about the hour he spoke. The hour he spoke had nothing whatever to do with when God heard him, and he knows that perfectly well in daylight.
You're hearing receipts rather than deliveries, because the prayer never had to cross anything. Scripture sets every member in one body under one Head, and the Spirit is in both kitchens at once without traveling between them.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
This rests on His finished work rather than on your condition today. He lives in you, the Spirit carries the words, and the outcome is left in the hands that arranged the whole thing.
Speak the whole of it and let it stand.
Nothing had to cross anything, and what reached me was never a copy. It is written that God hath set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased Him, and it pleased Him to set me here. The Spirit carries what those three friends said into this kitchen without needing a signal to do it. I am not holding a substitute. Their prayers went up before I woke, and what I heard this morning was a receipt rather than a delivery. I receive what was given while I slept.
