The Names Still in the Phone

This message is for the believer whose contact list of scattered Christians feels too informal to prove she still belongs to anything

For the believer whose contact list feels too informal to count as belonging.

What exactly is informal supposed to be the opposite of, and who decided it was the opposite of real?

They're all still in there. The woman who led the Tuesday group, filed under her first name with a heart you put beside it in a year when you were closer. Two couples from the old home group. The man who prayed with you in a car park after the worst appointment of your life.

You haven't deleted a single one, and you haven't rung most of them either. The list sits there like a shelf of books you keep meaning to reread.

Once in a while one of them sends a message on a birthday. You reply warmly. Neither of you suggests meeting, because the distance has gone on long enough that suggesting it would be its own kind of admission.

Then you put the phone down and think the sentence you always think, which is that a contact list isn't a church and you are fooling yourself if you count it.

Informal was never the opposite of real, and a quiet list is not a severed one. It is written that believers into one body rather than into a record, and the Spirit holds those ties while nobody rings anybody.

The Names Still in the Phone

Informal Is Doing Damage as a Word

There's a word doing quiet damage here, and it's the word informal.

You use it about your own life a good deal. Informal contacts. An informal arrangement. Nothing formal, you say, as though formality were the ingredient that turns affection into belonging.

Formality is a useful invention. It makes relationships repeatable, it lets strangers cooperate, and it means somebody notices when a person stops turning up. I'm not against it and I wouldn't pretend its loss costs nothing.

What it can't do is manufacture affection where none exists. A rota puts two people in a room on a Tuesday. Whether either of them would notice the other's absence in March is settled somewhere the rota has no access to.

But formality is a container rather than a substance. Pour the same friendship into a rota and it becomes formal. Pour it into a birthday message and it stays exactly as real and gets called nothing.

You are joined to people by something formality only ever held, never created. Scripture binds the members to each other inside Christ before any arrangement is drawn up, and the Spirit keeps those bonds when the arrangement has lapsed.

The Sentence Has No Conditions in It

Here's the verse. Read it looking for the clause that would let you off, and you won't find one.

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.1 Corinthians 12:27 (KJV)

No frequency. No attendance. No mention of how recently you spoke to anybody. The sentence states a present condition and then stops, which is unusual for a letter otherwise full of instruction.

Paul was writing to people behaving badly toward each other at the time. He didn't make membership the reward for improving. He stated it as the ground they were standing on while they argued.

Those words went first to one particular difficult congregation, and they arrive in your kitchen without narrowing. Your membership is where you stand rather than what you earn back.

You are a member in particular tonight, with no clause anywhere about how long it's been. Scripture's sentence stands written flatly over people who weren't doing well, and the Spirit keeps it current while your phone lies face down.

What the List Is Actually a Record Of

Here's a different reading of that screen, because you've been reading it as an accusation.

Every one of those names is a person who knows something true about you. The woman from Tuesdays knows what you were like at your lowest and didn't flinch. The man from the car park knows what you said out loud when you had no filter left.

That knowledge hasn't expired. It isn't stored in the phone, it's stored in them, and eighteen quiet months haven't emptied any of it out.

So the list isn't a record of what you've failed to maintain. It's a record of people carrying part of your history, whom Christ has joined to you, most of whom would answer if you rang tonight and wouldn't require an explanation first.

You're held by people who still carry what they know of you, whatever the silence looks like. The written word calls them members with you in one body, and the Spirit keeps that joining alive without needing it performed.

I Am Not Setting You a Task

Be honest about the ending this refuses to write, because you can probably feel it coming.

I'm not going to tell you to ring three of them this week. You left a place that measured you, and the last thing I'll do is hand you a small obligation with a deadline attached so you can fail it by Thursday and feel worse than you did.

If you ring somebody, ring them because you want to hear their voice. If you never ring anybody on that list again, the verse above hasn't moved an inch.

Nor am I saying the people who kept all their Tuesdays are further along. They aren't. They're in a form of this you aren't in at the moment, and the comparison has never once helped you.

You can leave the list untouched and still be exactly what the verse says you are. Membership is Christ's doing rather than your correspondence, and correspondence was never the thing holding it up.

The Phone Was Never the Tie

The turn here is a change in what you think you're holding when you hold that handset.

You've been treating the phone as the connection, which is why a quiet phone feels like a severed one. But the device stores numbers. It doesn't store the joining, and it has never had the power to end one.

Christ joined you to those people. That joining happened somewhere else entirely, it doesn't run through a network, and it isn't measured in the date of the last message either of you sent.

Which means the wince you get when you scroll isn't evidence about your standing. It's grief about frequency, and grief about frequency is an honest feeling that has been telling you a false story.

You can feel the loss of contact and still hold the fact of belonging, because they were never the same object. The written word names you a member in particular tonight, and the Spirit keeps that true down a list you haven't rung in a year.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

None of this is invented. It agrees with something already settled in Christ, spoken by somebody He lives in, and carried by the Spirit. The rest is God's business rather than yours.

Read it through once, at your own pace.

Informal was never the opposite of real, and a quiet list is not a severed one. Scripture stands written, that now ye are the body of Christ, and he named no frequency and set no condition anywhere in the sentence. The Spirit holds me to people I have not spoken to in a year, and He has not let go of one of them. I am not fooling myself. The joining happened somewhere no network reaches. I stop scrolling as though that screen were an accusation.
