Nobody Expects MePsalm 119:130

The Page Under the Wooden Spoon

This message is for the former weekly study leader whose Bible stays closed when nobody expects an answer, who needs a practice with no answer required

For the woman who led the study for years and can't open the book without preparing an answer.

The spoon is the tell. It's lying across the open Bible on the worktop, holding the page flat, and it's been there since Sunday.

That's a woman who opens a book near the stove and expects to come back to it. You did it without thinking, the way you have done it for years, and then you didn't come back, and now the spoon has been holding Proverbs open for four days.

You'd open it at about half seven on a Tuesday, when the house was quiet and the pan was on. Read the passage twice, once for sense and once for the room. Then you'd start thinking about Karen, who'd disagree with the second half of it, and about the younger one who never said anything and needed a way in.

By eight you'd have the shape of Thursday in your head. That was the whole of your reading, it was real reading, and eleven women were better for it for six years.

Now the spoon holds a page you haven't looked at since Sunday, and when you glance at it your mind starts doing Thursday and then remembers there isn't one.

The light is given at the entrance of the words, and no answer is required of you. Scripture's psalm was written that way round, and the Spirit gives that light to a woman preparing nothing.

The Page Under the Wooden Spoon

Reading Toward a Room

Six years of reading toward a room does something to how a person reads, and nobody warns you because it looks exactly like diligence.

You read for the objection. You read for the woman who'd be hurt by verse nine. You read for the one who'd been quiet for three weeks and needed something she could take hold of without having to speak up.

That's a generous way to read and I wouldn't take a word of it back. It's also the reason you can't sit with a page now. Your attention has a shape, the shape is Thursday shaped, and there's no Thursday to pour it into.

So you glance at the page and feel an unfinished movement, like reaching for a rail that isn't there. That's not spiritual dryness. It's a hand trained to a task that's over.

The difference matters, because the two have entirely different remedies. Dryness wants waiting. A trained hand with no work wants permission to do the thing for its own sake, which is a smaller need and a more embarrassing one to admit.

You aren't dry, and you have a trained hand with nothing to hold. The written Word's psalm as written puts the light in the entrance of the words rather than in their application, and the Spirit gives it to you with no room to serve.

The Entrance Gives Light

Here's the verse, and the word to sit on is entrance.

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.Psalm 119:130 (KJV)

The entrance. Not the study of them, not the mastery of them, not the delivery of them to eleven women on a Thursday. The going in of the words gives light, which puts the giving at the doorway rather than at the end of the work.

Then the second half, which would have made you uncomfortable in your teaching years. It gives understanding unto the simple, meaning the light isn't held back until somebody is qualified to receive it.

Those words were first written by a man who kept returning to the same subject for a hundred and seventy six verses, and they arrive at a worktop without narrowing.

You are given light at the entrance of the words, before any work is done on them. Scripture's psalm as written puts the giving at the doorway, and the Spirit gives it to a woman with nothing to prepare.

Karen Does Not Need You This Morning

Say this as kindly as it can be said, because it will land hard either way.

For six years, somebody needed you to have read. That's a real weight and it's also a real gift, and part of what you're grieving isn't the study at all. It's being needed at half seven on a Tuesday.

I'm not going to talk you out of that, and I'd think less of any message that tried. Being needed is good, losing it is a loss, and the loss deserves to be named rather than reframed into something tidier.

But notice what it's doing to the page. You can't read for yourself because nobody needs you to, which means you've quietly made other people's need the permission slip for your own reading.

You have permission to read for nobody, and you never needed anybody's need to grant it. The written Word's psalm as written gives light at the entrance of the words to whoever opens them, and the Spirit gives it to the simple with no qualification anywhere.

I Am Not Finding You Another Group

Be plain about what this won't do, because you'd feel it coming and you'd be right to.

I'm not suggesting you start another study. Not eleven women, not four, not a call on a Thursday. If that happens one day and it's good, I'll be glad, and this doesn't need it.

Nor am I telling you to read daily now that there's nothing else to do with the hour. There's no rhythm being installed here. The place you came out of measured you, and a measure in a friendlier voice is still a measure.

What I want off the worktop is the sense that a page without a Thursday is a page wasted. The spoon can stay.

Take the Spoon Off and Leave It Open

The turn here happens on the worktop, and it's a matter of a few inches.

The spoon is holding the page flat for somebody who's coming back to work on it. That's what a spoon on a page means, and your hand put it there out of six years of habit rather than out of any decision.

Take the spoon off. Leave the book open anyway, with nothing holding it, so that if the window's open it turns a page and nobody minds.

That's the whole change. A book held flat is a book with a job. A book left open is a book you can walk past, read a line of, and leave, with nothing owed to anybody and nobody coming on Thursday.

You can leave it open with nothing holding the page, and nothing is lost when it turns. Scripture's psalm as written gives light at the entrance of the words, and the Spirit gives it on a page you didn't choose and won't finish.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

This is not a claim you are making. Union with Christ is the whole ground of it, the Spirit carries what is said from that ground, and how He orders what follows belongs entirely to Him.

Say the whole way through without hurrying.

The light is given at the entrance of the words, and no answer is required of me. Scripture says that the entrance of thy words giveth light, and the giving happens at the doorway before any work is done on them. The Spirit gives that light to me with nobody needing me to have read. I am not dry. I am a woman with a trained hand and no room to serve, which is a loss rather than a fault. I take the spoon off and read for nobody at all.
