The Hard QuestionRomans 8:1

Between Aisle Seven and the Till

This message is for the believer asked where they attend while waiting in a supermarket queue who needs peace rather than a better explanation

For the one whose chest goes tight in a queue before a word is spoken.

You are third in the queue with a basket that should have been a trolley, and the woman behind you says your name.

She's from the old congregation and you haven't seen her in nearly three years. She's genuinely pleased, she asks after your mother, and you have a perfectly good conversation about a wedding for about ninety seconds.

All of it is easy. That's worth holding on to, because you'll want to remember later that the first ninety seconds were entirely fine.

Then she asks where you are worshipping these days.

Notice what happened next, because you never have. Something happened in your chest before you said anything at all. A tightening, just under the breastbone, arriving about half a second after the word worshipping and well before you had chosen a single word of your reply.

You did not decide to feel that. Nothing was weighed and nothing was concluded. It simply happened to you, in a queue, while you were holding a basket that should have been a trolley.

Then you said something vague about a difficult season, and she was kind about it. You paid, walked out to the car, and sat there for a moment with the basket handles still in your hand.

That tightening arrived before a word did, and it was never a verdict. The written Word that there is now no condemnation, and the Spirit is the one who says so in your chest rather than against it.

Between Aisle Seven and the Till

The Body Answered First

Take the sequence seriously, because the order tells you what it was.

The word came first, then the tightening, then a pause, and then your reply. The tightening came second, before you had assessed anything, before you had decided what to say, before any thought had formed at all.

Whatever produced that was not a conclusion you reached, because conclusions take longer than half a second and they are made out of words. That was a physical event, closer to a flinch than to a judgment, and it is the same thing your body does when somebody moves suddenly near your face.

You've been treating it as evidence, as though the tightening knew something and was reporting it accurately. It doesn't know anything. It's a flinch with a history behind it.

Bodies do this. A man who was once bitten will pull his hand back from a friendly dog thirty years later, and nobody calls that a considered judgment about the animal in front of him.

A flinch is not a verdict, and yours came in half a second. The written word declares no condemnation over you, and the Spirit does not deliver His verdicts through your breastbone.

There Is Therefore Now

Here is the verse, and every word in the opening is load bearing.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Romans 8:1 (KJV)

There is. Present tense, stated as a fact about the current arrangement. Now. Not later, not once something is resolved, not when you are back somewhere on a Sunday. Now includes this particular queue.

No condemnation. Not reduced condemnation, and not condemnation held in reserve pending a review of your attendance.

The clause at the end is about walking after the Spirit rather than after the flesh, and it describes who this is true of. It isn't a performance requirement bolted on at the end. A believer who is grieved about being out of a congregation, and who still prays, is not a person walking after the flesh.

Paul said that to believers in Rome who were being told constantly, from several directions at once, that they did not measure up, and it carries over to a supermarket queue without losing any of its force.

No condemnation stands over you now, which includes the queue. The written word puts it in the present tense, and the Spirit is the one who makes it land.

What the Flinch Remembers

Be gentle here, because the flinch has a reason and it deserves respect.

Your body learned that from somewhere. Not from Scripture and not from God. It learned it in rooms where the question of where you were on Sunday carried weight, where an answer could go on a record, and where the wrong answer changed how people looked at you afterwards.

That's a real education, and bodies are good at retaining it. Three years of absence doesn't undo a decade of it, and it isn't a sign of weak faith that it hasn't.

It's also worth saying that not every one of those rooms meant to teach you that. Some did. Most simply had a culture in which presence was visible and absence was visible, and a body in that environment draws its own conclusions without anybody intending it.

What you can do is stop consulting it. The flinch is a memory of old rooms rather than a report on your current standing, and the two have been getting confused in a supermarket for three years.

Your chest is remembering old rooms rather than reporting on today. The written word settles today, and the Spirit applies it to a body that has not caught up yet.

I Am Not Telling You the Feeling Will Stop

Be honest about this, because a promise would be pleasant and false.

I cannot tell you that the tightening will go. It may, gradually, over a long time. It may also show up next month in a different queue with a different person, and you should not read that as a failure.

Nor am I telling you the woman meant any harm. She did not. She was pleased to see you and she asked the natural next question. Then she went home and thought about the wedding.

What I want off you is the reading. Not the flinch. Not the history that put it there.

The Basket Handles

Here is the turn, and it is in the last detail of the scene rather than the middle of it.

You sat in the car with the basket handles still in your hand. You had carried a shop basket out of the shop, which you have never done before in your life, and you did not notice until you were in the driver's seat.

That is a body under load. Not a person who has done something wrong, and not a person being judged. A person carrying more than they have said out loud to anybody, including to themselves.

Nobody in that queue condemned you. The woman did not, and God did not, and you would not condemn a friend who told you this story over a cup of tea. The only sentence passed in that supermarket was passed by you, on yourself, in half a second, using a flinch as evidence.

You carried the basket out because you were under load rather than under judgment. The written word says there is now no condemnation, and the Spirit has been saying so in your chest all along.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Nothing below depends on how you feel while saying it. Christ is in you, the Spirit carries agreement, and God orders what follows without consulting your confidence.

Speak it through at walking pace.

The tightening in my chest arrived before a single word did, and it was never a verdict. It is written that there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and now includes a supermarket queue on a Thursday. The Spirit is the one who says that in my chest rather than against it. I am not consulting a flinch any more. It learned what it knows in rooms where an answer went on a record, and it is remembering rather than reporting. I give the outcome to God and take the verdict back off myself.
