The Hard QuestionRomans 8:1

The Unfinished Sentence at the Library Desk

This message is for the believer who leaves an explanation unfinished and needs to know that no condemnation stands while a sentence is left hanging

For the one who leaves a sentence hanging and pays for it all evening.

The form is on the desk between you, half filled in, with a pen on a blue string that will not quite reach the box you need to write in.

It's a library card renewal and you're updating an address. The woman at the desk has been doing this for fourteen years and is friendly in the way of somebody who has decided to be, which is the better kind of friendly.

She glances at the old address, says she knows that road, and mentions that her husband used to help at a place at the end of it. Then she asks whether you were ever part of that.

You start a sentence. You get about six words into it, and then the whole of the thing arrives at once, and you stop.

The sentence just sits there. She waits half a beat, then says the new card will come in a week, and she slides it across with the form. You say thank you. You go home and think about the six words for the rest of the evening.

No condemnation stands over a sentence you left hanging, and the hanging was never a failure. The Word says that that there is now no condemnation, and the Spirit did not start counting when you stopped.

The Unfinished Sentence at the Library Desk

What an Unfinished Sentence Feels Like

Describe the sensation exactly, because naming it takes most of its power away.

It feels like exposure. A sentence that stops in the middle leaves the ending visible by its absence, and for a second you are standing in a library with the unsaid part hanging in the air between two people.

It also feels as though a verdict was delivered. Not by her. By the stopping itself, as though the fact that you couldn't finish proved something about the material you were trying to describe.

That's the part worth refusing. A sentence that stops is evidence about the weight of the subject and about the size of the room. It isn't evidence about you, and it certainly isn't a ruling.

None of that is what an unfinished sentence is. It is a person starting to speak about something heavy and discovering mid-sentence that the heavy part cannot be got into the space available.

Stopping proved that the weight was real rather than that you had failed. The written word says no condemnation stands, and the Spirit was present in the stopping as much as in the starting.

No Condemnation, Present Tense

Here is the verse, and it is worth applying it to a specific six words rather than to your life in general.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Romans 8:1 (KJV)

Now. Which included the moment you stopped speaking, the eight seconds afterwards, and the walk to the car. There is no part of that afternoon over which a sentence was passed.

No condemnation is an absence rather than a suspension. Nothing was noted, nothing was held in reserve, and nothing is sitting on a file waiting to be raised the next time you renew a library card.

That's worth taking slowly, because most people carry an instinct that something somewhere is keeping score. Paul's sentence removes the scorekeeper rather than improving your standing with one.

Paul wrote that to believers in Rome who were being weighed constantly by people around them and by their own consciences, and it reaches past that crowd to a desk with a pen on a blue string.

Nothing was recorded against you in the eight seconds after you stopped. The written word makes it an absence rather than a pause, and the Spirit has kept it that way.

She Finished It For You

Consider what the librarian actually did, because it was skillful and you have not credited her for it.

She waited half a beat. Not long enough to make the silence into an event, and not so briefly that it looked as though she were cutting you off. Then she moved to the card, which gave you somewhere to go and something to do with your hands.

That is what a kind person does when somebody starts a sentence and discovers it is too heavy. She did not ask you to finish it. She did not fill the gap with a guess about what you meant. She changed the subject to a library card in a way that let you out without anybody naming what had happened.

She's been at that desk for fourteen years. You are not the first person who has begun a sentence there and stopped in the middle of it, and you will not be the last one this month.

She closed the gap for you on purpose, and that was kindness rather than rescue. The written word leaves nothing standing against you, and the Spirit put a practiced person on the other side of the desk.

I Am Not Telling You It Does Not Matter

Be honest, because the evening you spent on it was real and I am not going to wave it away.

Six words that will not go further is a sign of something heavy that has not been dealt with. It is worth dealing with, with somebody, at some point, in a room with more time in it than a library counter.

Nor am I telling you that you should have finished it. You should not have. That desk was the wrong place, with the wrong amount of time, in front of a queue of two people holding books.

What I want off you is the verdict. Not the weight. Not the evening you spent thinking about it.

The Six Words Were True

Here is the turn, and it is about the part you did manage to say.

You have spent the evening on the sentence that stopped. You have not once looked at the six words that came out before it did.

They were true. Whatever they were, they were an honest beginning, said out loud, to a stranger, about something you have not said out loud to many people at all. That is more than you have managed in most of the conversations where this has come up.

A sentence that stops after six true words is six words further than silence. You have been grading it as a failure to produce twenty, when what actually happened is that you began to tell the truth to somebody at a desk and the truth turned out to be heavier than the desk.

Six true words are six more than silence, and the weight is why they stopped. The written word holds nothing against the stopping, and the Spirit was in the six words that got out.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

This is not a claim you are making. Union with Christ is the whole ground of it, the Spirit carries what is said from that ground, and how He orders what follows belongs entirely to Him.

Say the whole way through without hurrying.

No condemnation stands over a sentence I left hanging, and the hanging was never a failure. The Word says that there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and now covered the moment I stopped speaking and the eight seconds after it. The Spirit was in the six words that got out. I am not finishing a sentence for anybody. A woman who has sat at that desk for fourteen years waited half a beat and then handed me a card, because she has seen people stop there before. I let the six words stand and close the matter.
