Who I ServeHebrews 6:10

The Flask Beside the Night Shift

This message is for the believer who quietly takes soup to a night worker and doubts service that no rota records

For the one who quietly assumed that unrecorded means unreal.

You leave the flask on the low wall outside the yard at about half past nine, and you're home again before the man on the gate has finished his first round.

It is soup. You make it on Tuesdays and Thursdays, because those are the two nights he is on the gate, and you have been doing it since November, which makes it nearly nine months now.

He is sixty two years old. He works a twelve hour gate shift at a builders' yard, entirely alone, and there is nowhere within a mile of the place that is open after eight in the evening.

You have never once had a proper conversation with the man. He knows it's you, obviously, because there aren't many candidates, and twice he's left the empty flask on your step with a folded note that said thank you and nothing else.

And every single Tuesday, somewhere between the pan and the wall, the same thought arrives. Nobody is counting this. There's no rota it appears on, no report it goes into, and if you stopped tomorrow no system anywhere would register that anything had changed.

God is not unrighteous to forget, and the record you doubted was never yours to keep. The written word says He does not forget this kind of work, and the Spirit has had you at the pan since November.

The Flask Beside the Night Shift

Why Being Written Down Felt Like Existing

Follow the anxiety back, because it's more specific than it looks and it has a history.

For six years everything you did was recorded somewhere. Not formally, and nobody was grading you. But there was a list, there were reports, and there were people who knew what you had done, because the structure made it visible without anybody intending to.

That visibility did something for you that you never noticed until it had gone. It confirmed the work. You didn't have to decide for yourself whether your effort had been real, because the system decided it on your behalf simply by noting it down.

That is a considerable service and nobody thinks to be grateful for it at the time. Most people who leave a structured role discover within about a year that they had been outsourcing a judgment about themselves, and that they now have to make it alone.

Take the system away and the question comes back to you, and you have discovered that you cannot answer it about yourself. Nine months of soup, and you still don't know whether it counts, because the thing that used to tell you has gone.

You lost the instrument that used to tell you your work was real. The written word names who actually holds that record, and the Spirit has kept you at it for nine months regardless.

God Is Not Unrighteous to Forget

Here's the verse, and the construction is unusual enough that it's worth reading twice.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.Hebrews 6:10 (KJV)

Not unrighteous to forget. It's a double negative and it's deliberate. The writer is saying that forgetting this would be an injustice, and that God does not commit injustices, which means the remembering is guaranteed by His character rather than by anybody's administration.

Notice also the tense at the end of it. Ye have ministered, and do minister. Past and present together, which means the work currently under way is already inside the sentence rather than waiting to be added later.

That detail is doing something kind. A person in your position tends to assume that whatever counted belongs to the past, and that the present arrangement is a diminished version of it. The verse puts both in the same clause and makes no distinction between them.

The writer said that to believers who were tired and wondering whether any of it had been noticed, and it reaches past them to a woman carrying a flask to a low wall at half past nine.

Forgetting this would be an injustice, which is why it does not happen. The written word guarantees it by His character, and the Spirit has kept your Tuesdays going.

Labor of Love Is the Category

Look at the phrase the writer chose, because it describes what you're doing with some precision.

Work and labor of love. Not ministry in an official sense, not service rendered under an arrangement, but labor, which means effort that costs something, directed by love rather than by obligation.

Making soup on a Tuesday after your own day is over, walking it to a wall, and walking home again, is labor by any definition. It costs you an hour and it costs you the ingredients, and nobody has ever once required it of you.

That is the exact category the verse is about. It isn't a lesser version of the recorded kind at all. It is what the writer chose to name when he wanted to describe the work that God specifically does not forget.

He could have written ministry, or service, or duty, and any of those would have been unremarkable in a letter of that kind. He wrote labor of love, which is the warmest phrase available to him and the least administrative.

Labor of love is the category the verse names, not a lesser version of something else. The written word puts your Tuesdays inside it, and the Spirit has been in every one of them.

I Am Not Telling You Records Are Worthless

Be fair, because the six years mattered and this is not an argument against them.

Organized service is good. Lists exist because work needs coordinating, and the record keeping you're missing served a real purpose for a large number of people including you.

Nor am I telling you that being unknown is spiritually superior. It isn't, and anybody who tells you otherwise is usually making a virtue of an accident.

What I want off you is the doubt. Not the wish to be part of something again. Not the honesty about missing it.

He Folded the Note

Here's the turn, and it's in a detail you passed over because you were busy doubting.

Twice he's left the flask on your step with a note. Folded. A man at the end of a twelve hour night shift, sixty two years old, found paper, wrote on it, folded it, and carried it to your step on his way home.

That's a record. It's handwritten, it's in your kitchen drawer, and it was created by the only person whose opinion on this is worth anything at all.

You've been telling yourself that nobody is counting. A man who has no reason to do anything at all has twice gone out of his way to acknowledge it, which is more direct evidence than any rota ever gave you in six years.

Two folded notes in a drawer are a record kept by the one person who counts. The written word says God does not forget it, and the Spirit prompted a tired man to find paper.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

You have a standing you did not build, and this is spoken from inside it. Christ indwells you, the Spirit carries the words, and the result is God's to give in His own way.

Say it once, quietly, and finish.

God is not unrighteous to forget, and the record I doubted was never mine to keep. It is written that a double negative on purpose: forgetting my work and labor of love would be an injustice, and He does not commit injustices, so the remembering is guaranteed by His character. The Spirit has kept me at the pan since November. I am not waiting for a system to confirm this. A tired man of sixty two twice found paper at the end of a twelve hour night and folded a note onto my step. I make it again on Thursday.
